As the owner, Haldan Pflueger-Smith, always says, “If you invest in the community, the community will invest in you.” We at Tabletop Gaming Center have been striving toward that goal, and this quarantine is no different.
When we first learned we would be able to stay open pending some serious and stringent modifications, our hearts leapt. In such stressful and trying times, still being able to have fun and play games is one of the most important methods to controlling our mental and emotional health. We did not want our community to lose this opportunity, and it was also important to us that our employees felt secure in their jobs and lives.
On March 23rd, we notified the public that we would still be open seven days a week, from 10am-7pm, to provide people with all their hobby and gaming necessities. While people were no longer allowed in the store, we have been offering curbside pickup and home delivery on Monday, Wednesday and Friday to the towns of Berlin, New Britain, Newington, West Hartford and Wethersfield. It has been working wonderfully well and the community has been immensely supportive.
But it is not just about playing games and forgetting the world outside. We have three former educators on staff, including the owner who taught Math and Technology in Springfield for years, a manager who taught in Meriden and a manager who was a museum educator for the State of Arkansas. We have been providing outreach services to community organizations, libraries and schools for several years, and know the need many parents and teachers have right now as they are quarantined with their children at home.
Currently, one of our staff members is enrolled at CCSU in the Masters of Education program, and the owner decided that in this downtime a great resource for all of the parents and teachers at home would be actual, applicable lesson plans for many of the board games we carry here in-store. We post several each week on our website, www.tabletopgamingcenter.com, as blog posts. Topics range from Math and Science to Literature, History and even Economics, as well as each lesson plan covering all age ranges, from kindergarten through high school.
And even still we have not stopped supporting and investing in our community. Currently, we are offering hand-curated board game “blind boxes” based on your needs. For $50, $100 or $200 we will hand-select a set of games based on your input and what games you already know and like, offering anywhere from 30-50% off the selected games. Want a selection of four-player games for ages 10-20? We can do it! Perhaps the grown-ups are looking for some heavier tactical games for two to three people. We have you covered. We are also offering deals on role-playing game packages for those looking to get into Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder or My Little Pony!
We are also working with Wizards of the Coast and Pokémon to ensure the newest sets of their card games are making it into the hands of players. We are offering Prerelease-at-Home kits for both Magic the Gathering and Pokémon, as their regular releases fell in the middle of the quarantine.
We follow all social distancing rules inside the store, keeping 10 feet between all employees, wearing masks and gloves and staying away from others’ designated space. We wipe down all surfaces several times a day, do not pass phones or items between us and are doing everything we can to keep everyone safe and healthy.
We are very lucky to have the support we have in Newington and Connecticut as a whole. While many smaller game stores are shutting their doors or going down to a few days a week, we have managed to stay open, providing our services to the general public and keeping our employees paid and safe.
